The equestrian sport of dressage made its Paralympics competition debut at the Stoke Mandeville & New York 1984 Paralympic Games. Held in Texas, it consisted of 12 medal events with 15 competitors representing six nations.
It then took a break until Atlanta 1996 when para dressage became part of the regular sports programme, with riders competing on borrowed horses. This was also the case at Sydney 2000.
Athens 2004 was the first Games were the riders competed on their own horse, which is still the case today. Unlike many other sports, men and women compete against each other in para equestrian competitions. Competitors are currently split into five grades based on their physical disabilities.
Britain is currently the most successful nation with 34 medals, and Lee Pearson is the most successful athlete with 14 medals to his name.
