Help Horse & Hound support good causes

  • As part of Horse & Hound's 130th birthday celebrations, we will be supporting and promoting "130 equestrian good causes" via regular online round-ups of events being run by the equestrian community

    Go Purple with Richard Pitman

Former champion jockey Richard Pitman is urging people to support the “Go Purple” campaign this month, run by Kidney Research UK. Richard is an ambassador for the charity, which is running “Go Purple” throughout March, as World Kidney Day is on Thursday (13 March).
“I’ve already donated a kidney, but I want to continue helping those affected by kidney diseases,” said Richard. “What’s important is that more is done to help fund research into making transplants last longer and to help prevent kidney disease in the first place. It’s vital to raise as much money as possible to keep investing in research.”

    Daniel Crane art exhibition

An exhibition of sporting artist Daniel Crane’s work is being held on the 22 -23 March, with profits going to the Belvoir Hunt and the Army Benevolent Fund. It’s being held in Grantham, Lincolnshire and attendees will get the chance to meet Daniel.
“The challenge of bringing together the “Belvoir Collection” is something I had been keen to do for some time. The Belvoir Hunt offers some truly iconic landscape, along with superb characters and of course, hunting action and wonderful moments that serve as excellent inspiration!” said Daniel.

    Support Essex Jailbreak

4 women are taking part in the “Essex Jailbreak” to raise money for Essex Horse and Pony Protection. The aim of the jailbreak is to get as far away from HM Prison Chelmsford in 15 hours without spending money or breaking the law.
“We have chosen this charity because in the winter of 2013 we were involved in the rescue of an 8-month-old foal and his mother from a field in Canewdon,” said one of the fundraisers. “The Essex Horse & Pony Protection society based in Pitsea carried out the rescue, and seeing the valuable work they do has inspired us to take part in The Essex Jailbreak 2014.”

    South West Equine Protection ball

South West Equine Protection is holding a ball on 11 April to raise funds for the high number of ponies they have recently taken in. The ball is being held at the China Fleet Country Club in Plymouth and tickets cost £30.
“With the recent weather we have experienced lately we are really struggling with the amount of ponies we have had to take in as there is just not enough food or shelter for them,” said a spokesman from the organisation.
“We have now put out an urgent appeal to gain funds to help these ponies coming into us.”

    Cycle for the Horse Rangers

A cycling event from Hampton Court Palace to the London Irish Rugby Club at Sunbury on Thames is taking place on 30 March in aid of the Horse Rangers Association.
“We’re delighted to be supporting this wonderful young people’s charity. We need the public to register and find sponsors to help this worthwhile cause — then have a fantastic day out!” said Geoffrey Willis, the event organiser.

Colin Sargent, a saddler from Telford, has launched a charity following the death of his wife. The Jayne Sargent Foundation has been formed to help cancer sufferers and is looking for individuals or companies interested in holding fundraising events. “Over the past 10 years, both myself and Jayne witnessed many people affected by this terrible illness,” said Colin. “I hope that the Jayne Sargent Foundation will make a difference to those suffering from cancer in our local community.”
