On this episode, H&H’s eventing editor Pippa Roome caught up with Tim to talk about his recent success at Mars Badminton and Defender Kentucky, despite breaking his collarbone falling off a bike at an event in the Netherlands just a few days before the US five-star.

“I was biking back to ride my first horse on the cross-country after buying some studs, which were hanging from the handlebars, when the bag got caught on the temporary fencing. It yanked the handlebars to the left and yanked my hands to the left and I went down very quickly on to my right shoulder – I knew straight away, rolling around on the ground… crunch, crunch and a lot of pain. I could not believe what had just happened” – Tim outlines how he broke his collarbone, but that’s just the start of this incredible story…

Tim goes on to explain why he ended up needing separate surgeries on the injury either side of Kentucky, what it felt like riding through the pain when the plates came loose during his first cross-country round at the US five-star, and the positive learnings he’s has taken away from the injury. (Spoiler: it’s not to avoid riding bikes!)

Among other topics, Pippa and Tim chat about Vitali’s ninth top-10 five-star finish, including his first showjumping clear at the level in Kentucky. They also talk about why the 16-year-old has had his upper front teeth removed, and whether he needs any special management as a result.

Whether you’re an avid eventing fan or not, there is so much to enjoy listening to in this podcast. We love to hear your feedback on all our podcasts, so please do send your thoughts to pippa.roome@futurenet.com
