Royal International: Emily Ward wins two Hickstead titles

  • Emily Ward was one of the busiest riders of the day at the Royal International Horse Show on Wednesday, but her efforts were rewarded with two wins.

After clinching the Winter JC show jumping championship riding King Mac, the Cheshire rider switched rings to take the working hunter pony tricolour with Noble Danny Macks.

Working hunter riders had to contend with the worst of the weather, but this Irish-bred pony skipped round to win his 143cm class.

“He was an out-and-out good boy,” said Emily.

It was a day of mixed fortunes for Charlotte Horne who gained an early win riding Parkhill Beckham in the 133cm show hunter pony class.

However, jumping in the worst of the weather as the rain hit Hickstead late in the afternoon, Charlotte took a nasty tumble when her pony Gryngallt Pageant slipped up two fences from home.

After taking in three shows in four days, Clare Curry and her 153cm winner Noble Star claimed the show hunter pony championship.

“We still have our Pretty Polly (home produced) class to do, so I hope this has been a good omen,” said Clare.

Jonathan Stevens and Waterside Black Prince retained their 2011 title, the pair clinching the Ponies (UK) young riders mountain & moorland tricolour after winning their intermediate section.

Darren Crowe headed the pure-bred Arabian class for the second year running, his winning partner on this occasion being Caroline Sussex’s stallion Silvern Prince. The stallion has twice won at HOYS.
