Solihull Futurity awards 18 elite premiums


  • A total of 18 elite premiums were awarded at the Baileys Horse Feeds/British Breeding/British Equestrian Federation (BEF) Futurity evaluations at Solihull, West Midlands on Monday and Tuesday (18 and 19 August).

    Topping the scores on day one was Sara Lucas’ filly foal Zazu (Zack x Londonderry) in the dressage section with an elite premium of 9.20.

    The Futurity evaluators said she had: “Good ground cover, hind leg engagement and uphill tendency”.

    Dressage colt foal, Dashing (Debonair x Don Frederico) took an elite premium of 9.15 for owner and breeder, Bruce Matthews.

    His “good cadence, elevation and elasticity in the trot” were highlights for the evaluators.

    Charlotte King’s showjumping colt foal, Jiabeau Van Bouverie (Diabeau Van De Heffinck x Don Juan De La Bouverie) went home with an elite premium of 9.11.

    Charlotte said: “I brought the first foal I bred to the Futurity back in 2009. He got a first premium and the evaluators made some really helpful comments so I did a huge amount of research into selecting which stallion to put my mare to last year based on these comments and now I have an elite-scoring foal. It is fantastic, I am so pleased”.

    Also taking an elite in the jumping section was Caroline Williamson’s filly foal, Overton Golden Girl (Legrande x Sandro), the evaluators commented on her, “Good drive and motivation” and awarded a score of 9.11.

    Eventing colt foal, Parklodge Gunna B (Grafenstolz x Houston) took home an elite score of 9.04 for his delighted owner and breeder, Sharon Bayston.

    Sharon, of the Parklodge Stud said: “I am just thrilled to bits. I started breeding four years ago with the intention of breeding British bred horses to go on and compete.

    “This is the second foal from my mare, Zarina to go to the Futurity, her first foal scored a higher first premium. Gunna B, will in time go to Rosalind Canter who rides all our horses”.

    Further elite premiums awarded on day one went to; Sports Pony gelding foal, Bombay Sapphire (Tornado of Knabstrupp x Litton Tallisman) for Elizabeth Prosser, dressage filly foal, North Sandro (Furstenball x Sandro Hit) for Nicola Trinder and Greenacres Warrantia (Warrant x Claudio’s Son) a filly foal in the showjumping section for Ella Taylor of the Greenacres Stud.

    On day two, Lynne Crowden’s dressage colt foal, Woodlander Quo (Quasar du Chary x Margue H) took the highest elite premium with a score of 9.33. This score was closely followed by Lynne’s, Woodlander Gloria (Grey Flannel x Hotline) a filly foal who scored an elite premium of 9.22.

    Lynne said: “I am delighted with them both, Quo is a half brother to the elite scoring, Summertime Blues. Dam, Moulin Rouge by Margue H is just an amazing homebred mare”.

    Darren Mattia and Rosie Morton Deakin capped another successful Futurity year with dressage filly foal, Dominique (Dimaggio x Conteur) who scored an elite premium of 9.24. The evaluators were impressed by her, “Light, uphill and powerful movement”.

    Three-year-old potential showjumper filly, Silvesters Delight (Silvester x Carrowbawn Kook Katja) scored an elite premium of 9.16 for owner and breeder Sarah Clowes ensuring her place at the Futurity equine bridge selection day next season.

    Silvesters Delight scored a higher first Futurity premium in 2012.

    Sarah said: “She has been backed this year by Felicity Wells and will now be turned away before we start to get her out next year”.

    Elizabeth Child’s colt foal, Deboniska Highbury Stormy J (Debonair x Pik Polo) took an elite premium of 9.11 in the eventing section. Elizabeth and her foal had travelled from Pembrokeshire to take part in the Solihull Futurity.

    The evaluators were particularly impressed with his, “Super sit in the downward transitions”.

    Further elite premiums awarded in the dressage section included Sue Brennan’s, Jemimah HH (Lord Leatherdale x Cassander), this filly achieved a score of 9.08 for her owner breeder.

    Two elite scoring dressage three-year-olds Wikipedia and Stallone both also scored elite Futurity premiums when presented at the Futurity as foals. Filly, Wikipedia (Woodlander Wavavoom x De Niro), attained an elite premium of 9.04 for owner Hannah Markham and breeders Ted and Irene Green. Stallone (Sarkozy x Donnerschlag) who scored 9.04 is a colt owned and bred by Paula Cooke.

    James Campbell’s, Barahona Stud scored an elite premium in the showjumping section with their colt foal, Barahona Galakrond (Condor x Ramexico), who took an elite premium of 9.04 and also on the same score was showjumping yearling filly, Just Soda No Ice (Stallone Quainton x Night Shift) for owner and breeder, Zoe Feeney.

    The evaluators included Judith Davis, Lesley Peyton Gilbert and Fred Bergendorff, joined by Futurity vet, Jane Nixon.
