Roland’s nags and nails: my first fee-paying work!

  • This blog is sponsored by the PRO FEET range of hoof care products from NAF

As milestones go, this week just gone has got to be one of the most significant. I actually did some fee earning work.

This was doing a field trim on some brood mares at a flat racing stud who were out at grass.

Up until now, I’ve only been able to assist Kris, my training farrier in the day to day work.

Since College is looming, I’ve been busy smartening-up my homework.

I’ve bound my assignments, organised my photos, polished up my shoes (horse shoes) and tongs, stamp and pritchels, all of which have to be made ahead of this college block.

I’ve also undertaken a risk assessment of the forge, written it up and got most of the way through my IT project – yep we need to prove we can use a computer.

It will feel strange returning to college, but it will give me the chance for my tired muscles to recuperate, to get my head in the books and get the next level of theory under my belt.

Perhaps when I return from this college block, I’ll be even more useful to Kris and I can undertake some more fee earning work.

It will be a good while though before I’m bringing in more than I cost!

    Until next week
