Meet the Horse & Hound team of journalists

  • Lucy Higginson, Editor

Lucy has edited Horse & Hound for almost 10 years and has yet to have a dull day. She events (very badly) for fun, hunts whenever she can, and has written on topics ranging from embryo transfer to fall simulators. She’s reported from the 2006 Aachen World Equestrian Games and 2011 European Eventing Championships

    Jaki Bell, deputy editor

A journalist of some 30yrs experience, Jaki is a former editor of our sister title Horse, and has been with H&H for five years. A horse owner for 20yrs, she has a passion for exploring training methods, and is author of four titles including the best-selling 101 Schooling Exercises for Horse & Rider

    Karen Spinner, managing editor

A Cambridge graduate and big racing fan, Karen joined H&H in 2006 first as deputy news editor, and has since risen to managing editor, via a stint as acting editor of our sister title, Horse. Besides being vet page editor and running our annual Young Rider special issue, she oversees our media agreements, round table features, reader panel and more

Nicola Jane Swinney, chief sub editor, showing and point-to-pointing editor

Nicola is one of H&H’s longest serving staff members and knows her Section Ds from her Section As. Over the years she has written six horse books and articles on topics as diverse as legendary showing producers and the best hipflask tipples. She recently provided our first Horse of the Year Show H&H Live service

Pippa Roome, eventing, driving, Riding Club, Pony Club and endurance editor

Pippa, an Exeter graduate, and until recently an active eventer is, in the sweetest possible sense, an eventing anorak. She reported from the Kentucky World Equestrian Games and the 50th Burghley horse trials — and is a regular and very popular H&H Live commentator.

Catherine Austen, hunting, racing and polo editor

Catherine graduated from St Andrews, and joined H&H nearly 10 years ago. She pretty much lives on the hunting field or at the racecourse, but also loves eventing, both as a journalist and competitor. She has reported from the Pratoni European Eventing Championships, Badminton and Burghley, plus race meetings such as the Grand National, the Derby and the Breeders’ Cup, and has hunted all over Britain and Ireland.

Jennifer Donald, showjumping and products editor

After graduating from Oxford Brookes University, and a stint at the BBC, Jen joined H&H in 2005. A keen horse racing fan besides an avid showjumping follower, she has reported from shows ranging from Chantilly to Horse of the Year Show, plus the 2011 Madrid European Showjumping Championships

Alice Collins, dressage and sport horse editor

Alice joined H&H in early 2011 from Horse & Country TV where she worked on the website and in marketing. An amateur breeder and dressage rider herself, she now reports regularly and was the anchor for our ‘Today at Stoneleigh’ daily video updates from the 2011 National Dressage Championships

    Flora Watkins, news editor

Flora spent several years in BBC News, reporting for Radio 1, the Today programme and From Our Own Correspondent, when she was based in Jerusalem. A keen rider and eventing enthusiast, she joined H&H in 2011

    Charlotte White, deputy news editor

A self-confessed newshound, farmer’s daughter and journalist of 16 years’ experience, Charlotte worked on regional papers before joining H&H in 2007. A regular rider, she visited Ireland in 2010 to investigate the fate of Irish horses through the recession, to much acclaim, and is reporting in 2011 from the FEI General Assembly in Rio de Janeiro

    Amy Mathieson, news writer

A graduate of Exeter University, Amy joined our news team from Redpin Publishing in 2008. She writes on topics as diverse as The Queen to muckheaps and is a regular racegoer

    Carol Phillips, website editor

H&H’s web guru has been part of the H&H team since the website first launched back in October 2000. Carol oversees all of H&H’s online content, has been responsible for building our huge social media audience and introduced our popular H&H Live reporting feature. She owns two horses and enjoys eventing and dressage

Emma Sewell, magazine and web assistant

Emma, a graduate of Exeter University, joined H&H in 2011 from our sister title The Field. She hunts and events from her home county of Warwickshire, has written on topics as diverse as Badminton and ratting, and is endlessly patient when readers phone to demand why they aren’t in this week’s H&H
