Dig out your Union Flag and follow the European Championships in Denmark

  • It will be hard to top the euphoria that last summer’s dressage, para dressage and showjumping Olympic gold-medals stirred — but the British squads heading to Herning in Denmark for the European Championships this week (20-25 August) will be hoping to repeat their success.

Showjumping, dressage and para dressage are all being held at the same venue — at what is deemed to be Denmark’s biggest sporting event of 2013. And this is the first time para dressage will take place alongside other disciplines at the European Championships.

Whether you’re going to Denmark yourself, or planning to keep up with the action via the BBC and Eurosport — you’ll be able to spot famous Olympic faces heading the British teams for all three disciplines.

Charlotte Dujardin, Carl Hester and Laura Tomlinson will be joined by Michael Eilberg to defend Britain’s 2011 European dressage title.

Scott Brash, Ben Maher, William Funnell, Robert Smith and Michael Whitaker will make up the showjumping squad — with the surprise omission of Nick Skelton.

Vying for the para dressage golds will be Sophie Christiansen, Anne Dunham, Ricky Balshaw, Natasha Baker and Sophie Wells.

On Thursday 22 August part two of the team showjumping competition will be shown on the BBC Sport website (5-8.10pm) and on the red button (9.30pm-1am). It will also be on British Eurosport from 12-1pm and 6.30-7pm.

The individual showjumping will be on the BBC Sport website on Saturday 24 August from 12.15-1.25pm and 2.15pm-3.40pm.

The dressage freestyle to music will be shown on Sunday 25 August on the BBC Sport website from 12.30-4.10pm.

And highlights will be shown on Monday 26 August on BBC Two from 1-3pm.
