Riders injured and horse killed in Sligo beach race

  • Two young riders have been injured and a horse killed in an accident at a beach racing event in Ireland.

The two teenage jockeys were taken to hospital after their horses collided at the annual Cullenamore races in Sligo last Sunday (14 June).

The horses had been approaching the crowd when they fell.

One horse broke two of its legs and was put down at the scene.

One rider has been discharged from hospital after suffering bruising and shock and the other, who had a back injury, is said to be stable

“We think one of the horses may have had a heart attack, either that or they just clipped heels with each other,” a committee member told local press. “Unfortunately we didn’t have a screen so couldn’t screen it off from the public.”
