Surgery for British dressage champion

  • Nicky Barrett has undergone surgery to remove metalwork inserted to support her back six years ago following a fall

Mercedes-Benz national champion Nicky Barrett is recovering at home after undergoing surgery to remove the metalwork that has been supporting her back for the past six years.

Nicky broke her back in a fall, which necessitated four operations during which 25 pieces of metal were inserted.

The metal is usually removed after 18 months, but after so much time on my back and away from riding I wasn’t keen to undergo further operations at the time,” said Nicky.

Nicky, who had experienced increasing pain over the past year, wasin such discomfort while working-in for the grand prix at the nationals that she almost withdrew.

“It was my husband Richard who cajoled and encouraged me to compete, reminding me that I had nothing to lose as I was to be operated on thefollowing week,” she said.
