World’s leading showjumpers head to London

  • Eight of the top 10 riders in the world are entered for the Longines Global Champions Tour of London next week (6-9 June).

Among those competing for £640,000 in prize-money over four days are world number one Christian Ahlmann of Germany, Olympic gold medallist Steve Guerdat of Switzerland and reigning European champion Rolf-Goran Bengtsson of Sweden.

The full list of British contenders has now also been revealed and ticket-holders will be able to cheer on three members of the 2012 gold medal-winning Olympic team — Nick Skelton, Scott Brash and Ben Maher (pictured top) — as well as John and Michael Whitaker, Laura Renwick, William Funnell, Tina Fletcher, Tim Gredley, Robert Smith, Mark Armstrong, Yazmin Pinchen and Alexandra Thornton.

“I am really looking forward to it,” said Nick Skelton, recent winner of the Rome grand prix on Big Star. “I really hope the show goes well. You have got a good following of equestrian sports in England, so hopefully people will come along and support us.

“It is definitely on my agenda to win. We are there individually — no team event — so I will definitely be out there to try to win.”

Tickets are still available for the inaugural London leg of the Longines Global Champions Tour. Prices start from just £10, with a 20% discount for British Showjumping members. Visit www.globalchampionstour.com or call the box office, tel: 01933 304880
