Big wins for British showjumpers abroad

  • British showjumpers have been cleaning up abroad, with big wins in Germany and the USA.

Nick Skelton took his second Leading International Rider title in a week on Saturday (5 November) at the Kentucky Horse Park.

The title came with the bonus of a year’s lease on a silver Audi. Nick gave it two spins around the arena, to the delight of the crowd.

But he just missed out on a win in the grand prix when Californian Richard Spooner – known as “the Master of Faster” – posted a slightly quicker time in the jump-off than Nick and Carlo.

Meanwhile, Nick’s teammate, John Whitaker and Peppermill put up a tremendous performance to win the grand prix in Munich at the weekend (6 November).

The class, worth €25,000 to the winner, produced only two first-round clears and John flew round with Rebecca Stones’s 14-year-old Burggraaf stallion to win by a 1sec margin.

Full report in next week’s H&H (out 17 November).
