Check out this smart and ‘chic’ yet practical jacket

I tried this olive green quilted jacket from Hicks & Brown in size 10. I love the colour — it looks expensive but understated, so works in any context. This is a smart-looking but practical jacket, which is good for riding or any outdoor activity. It has flaps at the back to allow room for the saddle.

The fit is appropriate for its size, giving plenty of room for a jumper underneath (and a gilet if it’s cold). Although it’s a quilted jacket, it isn’t too boxy. The arms are a good length, too, not too short. It’s comfortable, and reasonably lightweight. It’s not really toasty, as it’s a fairly stiff jacket and you can’t tighten it at the waist to keep the draughts out, but you can fit layers underneath.

I like the gold Hicks & Brown badge on the arm. It’s not an in-your-face label, but makes the jacket look chic. The zips are gold as well, adding to the smartness. The dry wax look is chic too – you could wear it in town as well as in the country.

There are two outer pockets, and inner ones, but none have zips or poppers, which would be useful.

The hood is not terribly useful; it’s a bit stiff and doesn’t stay up as there is no fastening, but I think it looks good down.
