What you didn’t know about… Comanche

  • Rider James Robinson tells H&H about the workaholic eventer who is aiming for his 10th Badminton this spring.

    Fact file

    Stable name: Henry

    Age: 19

    Height: 16.2hh

    Breed: 7/8 thoroughbred

    Sire: I’m A Star

    Dam: French Girl

    Discipline: eventing

    Owner: Joy Robinson (James’ mother)

Groom: initially Katherine Basham (James’ wife), now Helena Charlesworth

    Best result: Badminton 4th (2004), 5th (2006) and 6th (2010); 3rd British Open 2004

    Four things you didn’t know…

1 His breeder, passionate Irish hunting man Joseph Cavanaugh, sold Comanche because he didn’t think the horse was big and bold enough to carry a man for a whole day’s hunting.

2 He failed the vet twice before the Robinsons bought him.

3 He tackled his first four-star at Burghley in 2002 and has trotted up at every Badminton since. He is aiming to start his 10th consecutive Badminton this May.

4 Cross-country day is the only time this normally kind horse gets grumpy. “He threatens to bite and wants to be left alone, like he knows the job he’s there to do,” says James.
