Bound Along in tragic accident

Peta and Edwin McAuley's advanced event horse, Bound Along, who completed Badminton in 2002 with Clayton Fredericks, has been put down after a road accident just yards from the Fredericks' Wiltshire competition base. <img src="/image/{7E84277D-2658-4303-AE9C-F7193F6717EA}.jpg" align="middle" Bound Along, a 10-year-old ID x TB, was being exercised by working pupil Dominic Ruane, when the gelding spooked and shied into the path of a passing car. The horse's foreleg became trapped in the wheel and shattered. Despite promptveterinary attention, nothing could be done to save the leg. "I'm absolutely devastated," said Clayton. "He was probably my number one horse. He had a huge personality, was a real tryer and had an impeccable eventing record — until Badminton last year he had never had a cross-country fault." Dominic was unhurt in the incident but, as Clayton explains, his working pupil feels terrible. "It is bad enough to be involved in that type of accident but it was made worse because he was riding my best horse." Bound Along was Peta and Edwin's first event horse. Bought as an unbroken four-year-old, he was produced by Clayton from novice to advanced. He was the highest-placed seven-year-old at Blenheim in 2001 and was being prepared for the Pau World Cup final this year and Athens in 2004.
