Isabell Werth goes for gold in new dressage helmet

  • German Olympic dressage rider Isabell Werth is going for gold again, with a new dressage helmet by Uvex.

Isabell has joined riders promoting the wearing of hats in the sport, following new sponsorship by the helmet manufacturer.

Isabell will wear Uvex’s new dressage helmet, which goes on sale next February, in competition and when schooling at home.

She said: “In dressage helmet wearing is almost a taboo, even on the competition circuit, and there is a clear need for action.”

She debuted her gold helmet at CDI Frankfurt on 16 December, and also has a marine-blue model.

Last year British rider Emile Faurie introduced a “no hat, no ride” policy on his yard and a number of American riders, including Heather Blitz, now wear hard hats in competition.

The move follows American rider Courtney King Dye’s fall in training, on March 2010. She fell into a coma and is still recovering from severe head injuries.

From 1 January safety hats will be compulsory for all riders at a British Dressage shows, except for those competing or in the final warm up for classes from Advanced to Grand Prix.
