  • TOCES logoWhether you are a professional rider, trainer, therapist or keen amateur enthusiast, an understanding of equine anatomy and physiology enhances allows evaluation of horses’ health and performance and is essential when planning rehabilitation programmes following injury.

    TOCES — The College of Open Studies — is hosting an intensive and comprehensive training programme covering all aspects of equine anatomy and physiology. The programme combines online and printed study materials with an intensive three-day practical course. Students who cannot attend the study week can elect to study the distance learning elements only.

    Equine Anatomy and Physiology COURSE

    Course content

    • Structure and function of mammalian cells and tissues
    • Cellular structure and function, cell components and functions
    • Tissue typesepithelium, connective tissue, nerves and muscle.
    • Equine structural anatomy
    • Skeletal anatomy and functions of bone and joints. Bone structure and formation. Location and function of major muscles, tendons and ligaments. Structure and function of the foot.
    • Body systems. Nervous, endocrine, cardiovascular, respiratory, digestive, urogenital and sensory systems.
    • Equine conformation. Evolutionary principles. Evaluation of conformation in a range of horses and how it relates to performance. Equine dentition.
