Manor Houses: how the other half live [Promotion]

When it comes to finding the right homes in the UK, there are certain things we tend to look for. Initially the ‘dream house’ springs to mind (gorgeous location, hundreds of rooms, large garden…) but reality soon intervenes, bursting our bubble with its financial facts and figures; budgets, down payments, mortgages, the lot! But who says money should be an issue? Who says that you can’t have the home you’ve always wanted within a certain price range? Well, we certainly don’t. A personal touch to a property can work wonders! Need inspiration? Here are some of our favourite manor houses to get you thinking.

Alnwick Castle

There’s something undoubtedly magical about this place but we just can’t put our finger on it…. Well, maybe it’s because Harry Potter was filmed here! Like us, the directors fell in love with its lush green gardens and incredible structure; an architectural masterpiece ideal for the big screen! There’s a definite air of mystery surrounding the castle, an aspect which thousands of visitors have found too irresistible to refuse. And its interior is just as impressive as the outside. Home to an unbelievable selection of state rooms, Alnwick is filled with iconic examples of art and furniture; it’s one not to miss!

Chatsworth House

Another Grade 1 listed building which has caught the eye of film producers is Chatsworth House. A beautifully British construction, it’s clear to see why this stately home was selected as the perfect backdrop to Joe Wright’s adaptation of Pride and Prejudice. A very romantic site, you could easily imagine an emotionally tormented Mr Darcy pacing these grounds. Located in the heart of Derbyshire, the manor stands on the east bank of the River Derwent, providing you with the best possible view of its 105 acre garden. Tended to by a team of eighteen gardeners, Chatsworth’s greenery is left looking spectacular all year round, so be sure to discover it for yourself.

Blenheim Palace

A building steeped in history, if you’re a fan of culture and heritage, then Blenheim Palace could be the place for you. As the name suggests, it’s the epitome of excess and grandeur, with breathtaking home treasures that date back as far as three hundred years ago. Distinctly Baroque in style, the Palace is perhaps most famous for being the birthplace of Winston Churchill, although since then it’s also been recognised as World Heritage Site. The interior of Blenheim fits typically with what would have been ‘court etiquette’ of the time, including a state dining hall, a drawing room and a library. It’s remarkable to say the least!

Highclere Castle

Another castle which has earned itself celebrity status is Highclere. Currently the setting of ITV1’s Golden Globe winning period drama, Downtown Abbey, Highclere has everything you could want from a country house. Priding itself on its Jacobean decor, extensive parklands and stunning landscapes, this exquisite building never fails to charm visitors with its royal demeanour. However, if you do intend to explore the castle yourself then don’t forget to take a look at the Egyptian Exhibition. Highclere was formally the residence of Tutankhamun’s discoverer, the 5th Earl of Carnarvon, and as a result, a dedication was made in his honour, so make the most of it!
