Started 11 years ago, Nomad Ideas — www.nomadideas.com — is a family business that sources unique and beautiful kilim (tapestry) from Turkey. Using the rugs the company creates bespoke furniture, products for the home, shoes, handbags and accessories such as colourful dog collars (pictured below).
The kilims are also used as rugs, which are incredibly popular as they look stunning and brighten up any room, while adding a warm homely feel. An added bonus is that they are the ultimate in hard-wearing and robust floor covering.
Right from the beginning the company’s kilim expert in Istanbul helped source the best rugs for each design. In 2007, company founder’s daughter Victoria joined the business after gaining a distinction on a 3-year course from the Association of Master Upholsterers. Victoria, pictured working right, was trained in and works using the traditional method to ensure these beautiful old kilims have a new lease of
life that will last many generations.
The company is happy to discuss any design ideas you may have which are not already on www.nomadideas.com. When needed, a local craftsman is used to make the wooden bases for all furniture products — they are designed to be very strong and made to last.
The metal framework for the fender seats (see photo, right) is also sourced locally — they are brushed steel, can have twisted or straight uprights, curved or square openings and be made to any height.
The sofas and chairs sourced in the UK are stripped back to their original wooden frame, which is then treated and re-upholstered before the kilim is put on. There is no point putting a precious rug on a piece of furniture which will not stand the test of time.
The company’s shoes, handbags and accessories are made to a very high standard in Turkey, with great care taken to provide fun colours and up to date styles.
Nomad Ideas runs a very personal service. Every detail is carefully thought through and for the larger items like the fender seats the team will come and measure your fireplace, so there is no room for error.
Nomad Ideas has made furniture for people all over England and Scotland as well as sending pieces to Greece, France, Germany and America. Every product is lovingly wrapped and put in a crate before arriving in tip-top condition. The team prides itself in going the extra mile to create a much-loved piece that will be passed down with happy family memories to your grandchildren, which is no less than these beautiful kilims deserve.
