Derby to move for Olympics

  • Hickstead’s Derby meeting will move to June next year, because it would clash with the Athens Olympics on its traditional August date.

Although attracting spectators is no trouble for the Sussex venue — this year’s Derby drew a record crowd — it is hoped that an earlier date (provisionally 3-6 June) will encourage more foreign competitors to attend.

The provisional date for next year’s Royal International is 21-25 July.

    Extra show at Hickstead

Hickstead will also host the European Veterinary Show Jumping Championships on 9-12 September, which incorporates Britain’s first international veteran show. The show is to be sponsored by Martin Dawes Systems.
