Online advice for new owners

  • Horse owners can download free advice on a wide range of basic horse care subjects from www.allaboutpets.org.uk, launched by the Blue Cross.

The website includes a series of free-to-download leaflets offering expert advice and support for owners and aims to ensure the welfare of Britain’s domesticated animals, including horses, by promoting responsible animal care.

There are 20 horse-related leaflets available, written in a simple and easy-to-understand style, covering a range of subjects including:

    • Choosing your horse
    • Looking after the older horse
    • Basic first aid
    • Colic
    • Winter tips
    • Laminitis – the facts
    • Training the young horse
    • How to keep your horse naturally
    • Euthanasia
    • Safety around horses

Simon Pope of the Blue Cross, says: “The leaflets have been written by equine experts with first-time and inexperienced horse owners in mind.

“They offer basic advice on a wide range of subjects from buying a horse to what makes a suitable homes for a horse, as well as advice on specific problems which we commonly see in our centres, such as laminitis and colic. The full set will give new owners a good basic grounding in equine knowledge.”

The Blue Cross hopes to expand its online service at www.allaboutpets.org.uk, which also has leaflets for dogs, cats and small pets, to cover a wider range of subjects in greater detail in the future.
