  • As part of racing’s plan to broaden its appeal to a wider audience, stewards’ inquiries are to be televised live for the first time in the sport’s history in Britain at this week’s Derby meeting at Epsom (4-5 June).

Cameras will be allowed behind the scenes into the stewards’ room, where jockeys explain their riding and a decision on the race’s outcome is made, to give the public an insight into the process and making inquiries more open and dramatic.

If feedback is good from jockeys and the public, the televised inquiries could become a regular feature of bigger meetings in the future.

The idea is part of Racing for Change’s scheme to attract a larger and more diverse crowd to the sport.
