Eventers, jockeys and showjumpers go head-to-head at Bicton Arena

  • Eventers, jockeys and showjumpers will battle it out in a new challenge at Bicton Arena, Devon on Friday, 23 August in aid of the Injured Jockey’s Fund’s Oaksey House.

Two teams of four riders from each discipline will jump a course in the main arena, including a steeplechase fence and a “skinny”.

Eventer Laura Collett, who has spent time at recuperating at Oaksey House in Lambourn falling her recent fall at Tweseldown, hopes to be able to ride in the competition.

“It’s a fantastic new competition for Bicton Arena which should be a lot of fun and I’m so pleased it’s in aid of Oaksey House,” said Laura.

Among those who have signed up to take part are the National Hunt jockeys Nick Scholfield, Joe Tizzard, Sam Twiston-Davies, Sam Thomas, Ian Popham, Gerry McGrath and Charlie Huxley. Eventers include H&H blogger Rosie Fry, Althea and Janou Bleekman, Bicton’s manager Helen West, Aaron Miller and Phoebe Buckley. And showjumpers include Andy Austin, Sophie Stockdale, Alan Thomas and Stevie Jenkins.

Helen said: “We hope to make it a yearly competition, raising money for a nominated charity. There will be a lot of people at Bicton next weekend as it coincides with our three-day affiliated showjumping show and it takes place in the evening, which will all add to the fun.”

The competition starts at 6pm. Entry is free and donations to Oaksey House are welcome.
