Top riders head for Essex international

  • Spectators visiting The Horse Show can look forward to seeing international show jumpers in action this month

Tim Stockdale, Di Lampard and Mark Armstrong, recently named for Britain’s WEGsquad, head the line-up for The Horse Show at Great Leighs (Essex County Showground), near Chelmsford from 16-18 August.

The CSIA event has a prize-fund of £53,000 and has attracted a strong entry. British riders also include Nick Skelton, James Fisher, Robert Whitaker and John Popely, while competitors from five other nations are already entered.

The show will also host the inaugural British National Scurry Driving Championships, a new series sponsored for thenext three years by The Horse Show.

To make the show a real celebration, ticket prices have been kept at 2000 levels, and children will be admitted free when accompanied by an adult. There will also be free show membership for owners of all competing horses.

There is a chance for spectators to be winners, too. There are two competitions in the show programme, with a £250 Equiline designer horse rug and a champagne balloon flight up for grabs.

Daily autograph-signing sessions and rider-escorted walks round the courses (places limited) will also take place at the show.

The international event will be the final major competition at the Great Leighs showground prior to its redevelopment as a racecourse, leisure and exhibition centre.
