Pony riders selected for John Whitaker jumping squad

  • The 2007 John Whitaker International Squad has been announced. A line-up of 12 pony show jumpers, all aged 16 and under, will be sporting the team colours at competitions this season, following a rigorous selection process. From this squad BSJA selectors will pick a team to represent Britain at the European Championships later this summer.

John Whitaker International has sponsored the Pony teams since 2004 and the John Whitaker International Squad was launched in 2006. It is run by John and his wife, Clare, who provide external support and help and advice both at shows and over the telephone.

“Pony riders are the first key step on the performance pathway exposing them to high class international competitions,” said British Equestrian Federation (BEF) World Class Start & Potential manager Vikki Underwood. “The John Whitaker International Squad gives a structured environment which allows a perfect foundation for competing successfully on the international stage. It links to the philosophy of the World Class Start & Potential programmes”.

Show jumper Rebecca Roe, 15, has been selected “squad prefect” for the next two months. The role of squad prefect is designed to introduce young riders to media responsibilities and teach them to have empathy with sponsors and take pride in their position. Rebecca will also be responsible for product testing for supporting companies and organising a prefect day for the squad.
