John Whitaker hits form in Europe

  • John Whitaker is enjoying a good run of form at present including a win in the Aegon Grand Prix at the Dusseldorf Masters in Germany

John Whitaker’s run of form continued at the DusseldorfMasters in Germany, where he and the stallion Lord Z won the major class of the show, the Aegon Grand Prix.

In a seven-horse jump-off in which just 1.5sec covered the top five placings, John and the reigning Daewoo champion had to pull out all the stops to defeat Germany’s former Olympic Champion Ulrich Kirchhoff and Damhus Los Del by a fraction.

John was delighted with the 12-year-old’s performance, as he had seemed a little below par in the earlier classes.

“I thought he might be getting a virus, but he jumped well when it mattered. It was a really fast class and the track was certainly big enough,” said John (above), who will be competing next in Zuidlaren and Vienna.

The class, which carried a total winner’s purse of 22,500 euros, had an interesting twist, as John took 12,500 euros home with him, while the other 10,000 will be invested for him by the sponsor.
