  • Tony McCoy is the UK’s top jump jockey of all time after clocking up 1,700 winners during his career to date

Tony McCoy has become the most successful jump jockey of all time withhis victory on the Jonjo O’Neill-trained Mighty Montefalco at Uttoxeter yesterday.

The seven-times champion beat the record held by Richard Dunwoody, taking his lifetime total to 1,700 winners. McCoy had won the previous raceon Dream With Me.

“Obviously, I’m over the moon,” said McCoy, with one of his rare smiles. “I feel I’d like to go out and do it again. Maybe tonight I’ll throw my arms in the air and celebrate.”

As he rode back on Mighty Montefalco the first of many to shake McCoy’s hand was his hard-working agent and friend, Dave Roberts. Once dismounted McCoy found himself submerged in a sea of congratulations.

He said: “Richard Dunwoody has always been one of my heroes and is the best jockey I’ve ever ridden against. Adrian Maguire and Charlie Swan are two others who’d be right up there with Richard. I am naturally very pleased to be mentioned in the same breath as someone like Richard.”

Mighty Montefalco was McCoy’s 97th winner of the season and the jockey is as low as 3-1 to ride 300 winners when the curtain comes down on the campaign next April. His highest seasonal score so far is 289 last season.
