McCoy breaks own winners’ record
4 March 2002
Tony McCoy is on track to beat Sir Gordon Richards’ 1947 record of 269 winners in a season
Tony McCoy broke his own record of 253 winners in a season thanks to a Jonjo O’Neill-trainedtreble at Huntingdon last weekend.
McCoy kicked off on Shamawan, booted home Firetree and completed his hat-trick on Master Tern.
That left the six-times champion starting the week just 14 short of the record number of winners in a season, 269, ridden by Sir Gordon Richards on the flat in 1947.
McCoy put his soaraway season into perspective when he pointed out: “All these winners will mean very little if I don’t ride winners at the Cheltenham Festival.”
