Owners devastated after 22 horses killed in barn fire

  • More than 20 horses have been killed in a fire at a barn in New Jersey, USA.

The fire ripped through Art and Betty Hahn’s barn at their farm, Heritage Acres in Lafayette Township, in the early hours of Saturday morning (21 January).

    All 22 horses inside – valued between $10,000 and $60,000 ( £6,400 and £38,000) died.

Mr Hahn, 77, told local press that the cause of the fire appeared to be electrical.

“I’m still in shock,” he said.

    “This is just devastating.”

The Hahns’ horses were regular competitors at shows on the east coast of the USA.

One, a four-year-old stallion called Mr Hollywood was being trained to compete in reining competitions.

“He was my last hurrah,” said Mr Hahn.

“We’re going to retire. I’m 77 at this point – it’s too old to start over,” he added.
