New chairman for Pony Club

  • The Pony Club council has elected Mary Anderson to succeed Lt Col Gordon Wesley as chairman from 1 January 2004, the 75th anniversary year of the Pony Club.

Mary has served the Pony Club as a volunteer for many years in several roles and is currently vice-chairman. Over a period of some 40 years, she obtained her A test, received a Pony Club scholarship and taught and examined at all levels in the UK and the USA.

Mary took the first Pony Club team to the USA to compete in 1965 — the team members included Mike Tucker, who went on to find fame as an international eventer, course-builder and commentator — and she has been an Area Representative for South Wales & Borders (Area 10).

District Commissioner of the Brecon branch for seven years, she is also an official British Eventing scorer.

She has a son, Nigel, and a daughter, Lucy, who has represented Britain on international Pony Club tetrathlon teams.

Her husband, John, was a BHS technical adviser and course-builder for almost 30 years, and is a Pony Club committee member and well-known supporter of the Brecon and Talybont hunt.

Between them, they have helped run most of the tetrathlon competitions in Wales and Mary has been a long-standing member of the Pony Club dressage and training committees.
