Farewell to former British team showjumper Fred Welch

  • Former British showjumping team rider Fred Welch died on 24 March, aged 81.

Mr Welch was the first British rider to win the puissance at Olympia — in 1977 on Rossmore II — and was regular on Team GB in the heyday of David Broome and Harvey Smith.

Although he still bred and produced showjumpers Mr Welch and wife Sue had moved into owning and breeding racehorses.

Current horses in training include Ocheekobee — with Richard Phillips, and Stoney’s Treasure — with Alan King.

Mr Welch leaves his wife Sue, son Peter and grandson George.
