Death of equestrian journalist and author Elwyn Hartley Edwards


  • Author of numerous equestrian books, journalist and former Horse & Hound consultant editor Elwyn Hartley Edwards died on Sunday, aged 80.

    Captain Hartley Edwards wrote more than 40 books on equestrian subjects, following from his book saddlery in 1963.

    He was editor of Riding magazine for 18 years, served on the British Horse Society Council and was the chairman of the BHS North-West Wales region for many years.

    BHS chairman Patrick Print said: “Elwyn was a brilliant journalist and one of the leading authorities on saddlery and the history of it.

    “He will be sorely missed by all who knew him in the BHS and throughout the equestrian world.”

    His funeral takes place at 3pm on Wednesday 19 December at Bangor Crematorium.
