  • As this picture sequence shows, Aachen’s major international show turned into a hellish nightmare for one rider. Her horse’s bridle was accidentally removed during the post-test tack check and he bolted around the show ground, injuring himself.

    When faced with every event rider’s worst nightmare, Paul Tapner had to resort to grabbing his horse’s browband after his bit snapped just before a fence in the advanced cross-country at Aston-le-Walls.

    A horse who was condemned to never be ridden again just 12 months ago claimed a championship title at the Royal International Horse Show on Tuesday.

    An owner has told of the touching farewell her mare was given thanks to the Household Cavalry.

    Penny Hume’s Welsh section D Poppy died on 13 June last year following a serious bout of laminitis.

    Dressage superstar Valegro is to appear at the Festival of British Eventing next month (4-6 August) – in a solo parade.

    The multiple Olympic medallist, who holds the world record scores for all three grand prix tests, will appear in Gatcombe Park’s main arena on the Sunday.

    Great Yarmouth wrong horse

    An investigation is under way after a horse won a race it was not entered for in an “unprecedented” possible mix-up at Great Yarmouth.

    Mandarin Princess won a novice auction stakes for two-year-olds at 50/1, but a microchip scan identified the horse to be three-year-old Millie’s Kiss — the trainer’s other runner of the meeting.

    A clutch of top-class entries has flooded in for the Land Rover Burghley Horse Trials over the past couple of days.

    For the home side, Zara Tindall will come forward with London 2012 team silver medallist High Kingdom, who finished 10th here in 2011 and could well go better this time.
