Irish Olympian Edmond Gibney in car crash

  • Irish event rider Edmond Gibney, 32, is in a critical condition in hospital following a car crash last Saturday.

Gibney, who was a member of Ireland’s eventing team at the 2004 Olympics, was taken to the intensive care unit of Southampton General Hospital in Hampshire after suffering head injuries.

“We are all shocked and saddened to hear the news of Edmond Gibney’s accident,” said Dan Butler, secretary general of the Equestrian Federation of Ireland. “We hope for a full and speedy recovery.”

Gibney, who is from Kells, Co Meath, has been based in the south of England for the past two eventing seasons. Last year he competed a number of horses up to intermediate level, finishing fifth in an intermediate section at Wilton on Lovejoy’s Quest and winning a novice class at Borde Hill (2) on Skywalker II.
