Isabell Werth welcomes back Gigolo

  • Gigolo FRH, Germany’s most successful dressage horse ever, has been reunited with his rider Isabell Werth to enjoy his retirement

Gigolo FRH, the long-time dressage partner of Germany’s Isabell Werth, has been reunited with his rider to continue enjoying his retirement.

The 19-year-old Hanoverian gelding remained with his 76-year-old owner Dr Uwe Schulten-Baumer when Isabell switched trainers last year after being based with Dr Schulten-Baumer for 15 years.

Isabell announced Gigolo’s retirement at the Sydney Olympics after an amazing career which saw them claim 19 gold medals at World, European Championships and Olympic Games, including seven individual and nine team golds since 1991, plus Olympic silver behind Nicole Uphoff and Rembrandt in Barcelona.

Isabell relocated her team of horses, including FRH Antony, to the yard of former German team chef d’equipe Madeline Winter-Schulze in Mellendorf, Germany, last year, where she also trains with Wolfram Wittig and Holger Schmezer, the German national dressage coach.

Gigolo will be turned out in a meadow at Isabell’s new base where she is currently training her four horses – Anthony, Apache, Richard Kimble and Satchmo.

“In Germany we say: ‘You should stop something when it is most beautiful’,” says Isabell.

“Gigolo and I have had the greatest successes which you can reach in dressage”.

He is the most successful dressage horse in the world. He shouldleave the stage as a champion and he should be a champion in the mind of all his fans.”
