Ten top tips for buying a horse trailer

  • Thinking about buying a trailer, but not sure what you should be looking for? Worried about rules and regulations on towing? Follow H&H’s top tips to help guide you through the process.

    1. Consider part-exchange if you’re trading up from an older model
    2. Try before you buy — hire a few different models for day trips to discover what suits you best
    3. Tempt a tricky loader with transparent PVC partitions and panoramic viewing windows that create a bright interior
    4. Check that your postcode is insurable — parts of the UK are trailer-theft hotspots
    5. Take a look at the new collapsible breast bars or quick-release versions that can be operated externally — these are a must in the event of an emergency
    6. Make sure your tow bar meets EU regulations governing type, height and fitting
    7. Protect your new purchase with anti-theft measures such as security marking, database registration, wheel clamps and hitch locks
    8. Consider breakdown cover. According to the OHTO, one in five towing set-ups suffers some sort of breakdown each year. Without cover, costs range from £150 for a tyre blow-out to £1,500 for full recovery
    9. Invest in a hitching mirror for easier coupling. Try the i4eye from the Horse Trailer Shop — www.horsetrailershop.co.uk, tel: 01929 550405
