Davy Jones, frontman of The Monkees and former jockey, dies


  • Davy Jones – frontman of sixties pop group The Monkees and former amateur jockey – has died of a heart attack.

    The Manchester-born singer died in Florida, where he now lives, yesterday (Wednesday 29 February). He was 66.

    As well as being a singer and actor, in The Monkees television show and Coronation Street, Davy also owned and rode horses.

    He rode as an apprentice jockey in Newmarket for trainer Basil Foster, as well as holding an amateur jump jockeys license.

    He won his first race as an amateur at Lingfield in 1996 on Digpast.

    Davy also owned several racehorses in Pennsylvania and England and his daughter Talia is a keen showjumper.

    The Monkees had nine top 40 hits including I’m a Believer, Daydream Believer and Last Train to Clarksville.
