  • The annual “amateur derby” gets underway at Epsom racecourse on Bank Holiday Monday

Twelve amateur jockeys from Britain and Europe will get their chance to ride one of the greatest flat racecourses in the world when they take part in the amateur derby this Bank Holiday Monday.

This will be the 39th running of the annual event which is part of a family day at the course, sponsored by Moet and Chandon Silver Magnum.

Clerk of the course, Andrew Cooper, said: “The jockeys – six from Britain and six from Europe consider it an honour to be chosen to ride the race.

“Some from Britain may go on to ride professionally, but really it’s just a fun day for all concerned.”

Apart from the racing, there is also a range of family entertainment, such as bouncy castles, go-karts and a Punch and Judy show.

For the first time this year, a country and western area in the Vodafone Village gives people a chance to try a number of Western activities like rodeo bull riding and lassoing.

The gates open at 12am, racing starts at 2.05pm. All children under 16 get in free.
