  • Newmarket trainer James Fanshawe had his first Classic victory at The Curragh (16 September), with the six-year-old Arctic Owl.

Arctic Owl won the Jefferson Smurfit Irish St Leger, beating Mark Johnson’s Yavana’s Pace – runner-up for the second consecutive year.

The victory means that Arctic Owl will almost certainly have secured his flight to Australia for the Melbourne Cup on 7 November.
