Johanna Vardon, the founder and owner of the National Foaling Bank, has been recognised for her outstanding services to the British sport horse breeding industry.

Johanna was hailed as a “good Samaritan for the breeding industry” on Saturday evening as she was awarded the Merial Meritoire.

The award was the finale of the British Breeding Breeders dinner and awards ceremony in London, at which 25 individuals and studs were recognised for their achievements in furthering the British-bred horse over the past year.

Founder of the National Foaling Bank in Shropshire 43 years ago, Johanna has been responsible for nearly 19,000 adoptions and has taken over 71,000 calls for help.

The bank provides an adoption service for orphan foals by matching them with a suitable foster mare which has lost its own foal, and takes on a range of problems from mares with foaling difficulties to foals that need 24-hour nursing.

“Johanna has helped everyone large thoroughbred studs to the one-horse breeder,” said Mike Tucker, compere for the evening. “But her great skills are in her vast knowledge of animal husbandry and dealing with distraught mare owners — she is one of life’s great heroes.”

As well as founding the National Foaling Bank, Johanna has also bred 500 horses from one foundation mare.

“Everything started from one little pony that appeared in my kitchen when I was a child,” she explained. “From her I went on to breed 500 horses from the same family — the smallest at 12.2hh the largest at 18hh.”

Chairman of the Supporters of British Breeding, Desi Dillingham, was also honoured as “supporter of the first decade” of British Sport Horse Evening.
