WEG para dressage

The para dressage competition promises to be be tight at the FEI World Equestrian Games 2018 as Team GBR looks to retain our unbeated position on top of the team podium.

Team gold is far from a certainty this time — every British team member must be on top form to maintain their golden run — but in Sophie Wells, Natasha Baker, Erin Orford and Lee Pearson, we would never expect less.

The major difference in this year’s British line-up, however, is the absence of a super-high scoring grade I combination, as we have relied on for beefy scores at previous championships, and this could mean the difference between gold and silver — or even bronze.

Denmark, the Netherlands and Germany could all feasibly pip the Brits to gold — the Danes came close to doing so in Gothenburg last year.

The USA should not be discounted either; their average team score from 2018 is higher than that of the Netherlands, and they’ll relish the home support. Italy, too, mustn’t be underestimated.

So while Britain’s combinations have all it takes to top the podium once again, they will be pushed all the way by several nations determined to end our reign once and for all.
