New ride for John Whitaker

  • John Whitaker takes over the ride on Olympic show jumping mare, Bit More Candy

Show jumper John Whitaker has been asked to take over the ride on Bit More Candy, the horse partnered by Carl Edwards at the Sydney Olympics.

Carl asked John if he would like to take over at the recent Royal Windsor Show, where Bit More Candy took third place in the ladies’ championship with Amanda Edwards.

The decision followed the sale of Carl’s other good home-bred mare, Candy Lupe, as he is unable to continue at top level with only one horse.

John took the mare to a small local show last week before setting out on the Iberian Tour of Madrid, Lisbon and Barcelona.

She seems good, but we’ll just have to wait and see what happens. You can never tell with horses,” said John, who has been searching for another grand prix horse.

The 13-year-old Bit More Candy, whose winnings total more than£40,000, was bred by Carl’s father Charlie Edwards.

Carl will now concentrate on producing the home-bred horses, which include many of Bit More Candy’s relatives.
