Comberton Clancy sparkles at Royal Windsor Horse Show

  • University student Sofia Scott, 17, captured the amateur hunter title on another rain-soaked day at Royal Windsor Horse Show today.

Riding Sally Ann Cowley’s Hood-produced small and intermediate campaigner, Miracle Mickey, Sofia trounced a quality field at her very first attempt.

Reserve went to the heavyweight victors, equine photographer Georgina Humphrey with her 2010 Search for a Star hunter winner, Malins Amiro.

The classes were held in half of the Castle Arena, while riding horses occupied the remaining space. Here, even the novice contenders coped admirably with the many distractions, which included the mock fa §ade of Buckingham Palace and life-size models of Kenyan animals set in a tropical garden.

The riding horse title went to last year’s RIHS, national championship and HOYS supreme, Comberton Clancy, owned by Carol Bardo and Jackie Beatham and as usual partnered with skill and aplomb by Jayne Webber. It was a close decision, though, and last year’s novice victor, Paul Mortimer’s small contender Whittaker’s Prince (Danielle Heath), was well up in reserve.

“I’m amazed at how well all the horses went in here,” said Carol Bardo.

Coloured sections had to compete on grass and by the end of the day, the Copper Horse Arena had become quite churned up. Sarah Harrison’s lovely traditional mare, Chantilly Lace, made light of the mud and claimed the title, pipping the four-times HOYS winner, The Humdinger (Jayne Webber).

“It’s our first time here,” said Sarah. “We’ve been meaning to come for several years, but something has always cropped up!”

Shelley Wheeler’s plaited sports horse stallion, Winchester D, lifted the in-hand championship, ahead of Kim Colosso’s enchanting yearling filly, Kellythorpe Eye Candy.
