Forty-three horses die in US barn fire

  • Two men and 43 horses have been killed in a barn fire in America at the weekend.

The fire broke out at around 5am Saturday morning (6 November) at a harness-racing track in southwest Ohio.

By the time firefighters arrived at Lebanon Raceway at Warren County Fairgrounds, the roof of the barn had already collapsed.

Excavators spent the weekend removing debris and horse carcasses from the site.

Warren Fair board member Chris Lutmer told local press: “We wanted to get them out as quickly as possible so people didn’t have to look at them.”

Officials said at least six winners from the race meeting on Friday night died

Authorities have also confirmed that two men died in the fire. They have not been officially identified but locals believe the men to be grooms.

The incident is being investigated but so far authorities have ruled out arson.
