New equine policy ensures “home for life”

  • A new insurance policy which guarantees horses over the age of 15 a home for life should their owners die is being offered by South Essex Insurance Brokers (SEIB). It’s a joint venture with Redwing Horse Sanctuary based in Norwich in East Anglia.

“We were approached by Redwing Sanctuary about 12 months ago who said they were getting so many calls from relatives of people who had died and owned horses. They have limited funds and couldn’t always help out so they wondered if we could do something to help,” says Colin Baker, projects director of South Essex Insurance.

Customers pay a one-off fee, which can vary from around £200 to £1,000, depending on their age, which can be paid in 12-month instalments and is valid for 10 years.

This guarantees a minimum sum of £8,000 to be paid to Redwings to care for their horses should the owner die in that time. SEIB is also donating £25 to Redwings for every policy taken out to help with the upkeep of its existing residents.
