Rosie Fry’s eventing blog: a win on the racecourse — and a trip to hospital

  • It has been a rather up and down couple of weeks for the Fry family. My poor twin, Jamie, came off out hunting, along with 3 other riders who all jumped the wrong part of a hedge.

He managed to smash his collarbone pretty badly (pictured in hospital) and then the following weekend my father came off and got a hoof in the face, but luckily it’s all superficial cuts and bruises. Whereas Dad will be back hunting this weekend, I think it will be a rather long boring winter for Jamie!

The exciting news is about Zulu Oscar, a racehorse my mother part owns. My brother Harry bought him at the sales and trains him at his yard at Seaborough. The horse won the bumper at Wincanton and in doing so provided Harry with a great Saturday double, after the win of Highland Retreat in an earlier race.

It was Zulu’s 3rd race and having finished 6th and 2nd before, it was great for him to get his nose in front and very special for my mother to have her first National Hunt winner trained by her son! Hopefully he has an exciting career ahead of him and as a 4-year-old should improve from every run.

It has been a busy few weeks in Harry’s yard and he is definitely making the most of me — both riding out and in the school where I seem to have spent more time than up the gallops lately! I have mainly been schooling a few of the 3-year-olds, as it is really good for them to learn to carry themselves properly. It is slightly more challenging doing flatwork in a racing saddle than a nice dressage saddle though!

Rosie Fry's 4-year-old ArchieKitkat (Another Breakfast) and my 4-year-old, Archie (pictured), are doing a bit more work each week and will soon be ready to go out to a few British Showjumping and dressage competitions. In the meantime I am certainly being kept busy with the racehorses.

This weekend we are off to hunt with the Warwickshire and then going to their hunt ball in the evening so fingers crossed the Fry family manage to stay in the saddle!
