Miniature horse sale

  • Europe’s first sale of miniature horses takes place on Thursday 20 September in Holland.

This year sees the first ever European sale of miniature horses. The sale takes place atthe Kossak Stud in Zuidoostbeemster, Holland, on 20 September and 42 horses are expected to come under the hammer.

Minature horses have grown in popularity over the past few years. Originating from Argentina, they were bred by the Falabella and Bergmann families from whom they take their name.

Mireille Steenkamer from Stichting Miniature Horses, said: “We are hoping to build this sale up to become an annual event – the goal is to promote miniature horses in Europe.”

Standing between70 and 90cm, miniatures come in all colours. Their fine build stands them apart from ponies such as the Shetland. As a breed, they are fairly quiet and are renowned for their intelligence. In USA they have even been trained to act as guides for the blind.

A versatile breed, they have been used as a children’s mount, domestic pet and companion. High profile horses including Gestion’s Bonfire and Top Gun both have a Fallabella to keep them company at home.

The sale begins with a preview at 4pm when the horses can be viewed, the auction begins at 8pm. For potential buyers not able to be present, there is the chance to bid by telephone.
