Burghley Horse Trials named L’Annee Hippique Best Event

  • The Land Rover Burghley Horse Trials has been named L’Annee Hippique Best Event of 2008 — as voted for by riders.

It is the fifth time Burghley has won the award, promoted by the international equestrian yearbook, having previously won in 1961 — the event’s inaugural year — 1992, 1998 and 2002.

And it is especially notable this year as heavy rain meant the event was close to being cancelled.

Leading riders in all three Olympic disciplines are asked by L’Annee Hippique to nominate their favourite events each year, based on aspects including stabling, ground condition, course preparation, hospitality and prize money.

Burghley was voted best event by riders for its attention to detail, course preparation, hospitality and helpful attitude.

Event rider Nicola Wilson, who was fifth at this year’s event with Opposition Buzz, voted for Burghley.

“Burghley is a fabulous venue and we all know that the course and going will always be well prepared,” she said.

“The facilities, such as the all-weather arena, are much appreciated, on top of which the organisers are so accommodating and pleased to see you. It is a lovely event that we always enjoy going to.”

Director of Burghley Elizabeth Inman said: “To win an award is always gratifying and for it to have been voted for by riders is even better.

“But to receive such an accolade this year, after what became a testing four days is extra special. For the team at Burghley this recognises their hard work and acknowledges the huge contribution they made to the event.”
