Irish WEG SJ squad named

  • Ireland has announced its SJ squad for WEG and has confirmed it won’t be sending a team to this year’s Samsung Nations Cup Finals

The Irish show jumping selectors have named their squad for the World Equestrian Games (17-22 September).

The reigning European Championship team of Peter Charles [pictured], Dermott Lennon, Kevin Babington and Jessica Kurten are included, plus Cian O’Connor, who has won this year’s Samsung Leading Rider Award.

The Equestrian Federation of Ireland has also confirmed that it will not be sending a team to the Nations Cup Finals.

EFI secretary-general Ned Campion said: “Our primary objective is not the Samsung Nations Cup Final, but the World Equestrian Games in Jerez. This is the vital show for Ireland, as it is so essential to qualification of riders and horses for the 2004 Olympics in Athens.

“We are also keen to accumulate as many Nations Cup points as possible, with a view to qualifying for next season’s Nations Cup Superleague. Over the next month we will be sending teams to a number of four-star Nations Cup competitions.”

Irish teams will be taking part in the following Nations Cup shows:

    • Gijon, Spain (24 August – 1 September)
    • Rotterdam, Netherlands (29 August – 1 September)
    • Calgary, Canada (4-8 September)
