  • Brand new racecourse Great Leighs has been given the provisional green light to race this Sunday, 20 April.

An inspection by British Horseracing Authority’s Racecourse Inspectorate earlier today (Thursday 17 April) gave the Essex-based track the go-ahead, pending a final inspection tomorrow.

BHA spokesman Paul Struthers said: “Great Leighs has made excellent progress and addressed the vast majority of issues that were outstanding when our Inspectorate visited on Sunday, but there are still five key areas that are being completed this afternoon, including the emergency services road.

“However, as the racecourse is so close to meeting the necessary standards laid out in our General Instructions, we felt it would be premature to abandon the meeting, particularly mindful of connections planning to run.

“In order to minimise any potential inconvenience to trainers, a final decision will be taken by 9am tomorrow and, in the unlikely event that the outstanding issues have not been addressed by that time, the meeting will be abandoned; all trainers with entries will be informed via the Weatherbys text service and entry fees will be refunded.”
